Blog Privacy Notice

This notice explains how Subnetica handles visits, analytics and newsletter signups on blog.subneti.ca. For other Subnetica services, see our main privacy policy. Contact contact@subneti.ca with blog or newsletter privacy questions or requests.

Umami analytics and heatmaps

We use Umami analytics at analytics.subneti.ca to understand which guides people read, how they find the blog, and how to improve its content and usability. Analytics can include page URLs (including query parameters), page titles, referring pages, visit times, browser and operating system, device and screen size, browser language, and approximate location.

Umami processes IP addresses to derive approximate location and generate rotating, pseudonymous session identifiers. Raw IP addresses are not stored in Umami’s standard analytics records; infrastructure providers may separately process or retain IP addresses in operational and security logs. Umami does not use analytics cookies or advertising profiles. These session identifiers group visits without identifying newsletter subscribers by email.

We also use sampled click and scroll heatmaps. These collect click coordinates, scroll depth, page URLs, timestamps, and page and viewport dimensions to show aggregate engagement patterns. The current heatmap configuration does not collect text entered into form fields. Individual session replay is disabled.

The analytics tracker is configured to respect a browser’s Do Not Track setting where supported. You can also block requests to analytics.subneti.ca using your browser’s privacy controls or a content blocker. Website analytics are separate from newsletter delivery: unsubscribing stops emails but does not change website analytics. For more about Umami’s data handling, see its metric definitions and heatmap documentation.

Newsletter data we collect and why

The signup form asks for your email address. We associate it with the language-specific mailing list you choose by using that page’s form. MailPoet records subscription and confirmation information, including timestamps, IP addresses and signup source, to operate the service, prevent abuse and document your subscription. Delivery systems also process information needed to deliver messages and handle failures.

Your choice to subscribe

We use your consent to send Subnetica networking explainers, troubleshooting tips and learning updates. Submitting the form requests a confirmation email; you must confirm before receiving newsletters. Subscribing is optional and is not required to read the blog. Creating a WordPress account does not subscribe you to these newsletters.

You can withdraw your consent using the unsubscribe link in a newsletter or by contacting us. Withdrawing consent stops future newsletter delivery and does not affect the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.

MailPoet and email delivery

We use the MailPoet plugin on this WordPress site and the MailPoet Sending Service to manage subscriptions and deliver messages. These service providers process subscription and delivery information to provide that service. See MailPoet’s privacy notice for its processing and international data-transfer information. This newsletter configuration does not track individual email opens or link clicks, and optional MailPoet engagement-cookie tracking and timezone collection are disabled.

Retention and unsubscribing

Newsletter subscription records are stored in this site’s MailPoet database. Unsubscribing stops delivery but does not automatically erase the record: subscription, consent and delivery-suppression information may remain. Erasure can be requested separately using the contact below. The current system does not automatically delete unconfirmed subscriber records. MailPoet’s configured sending-queue message-body retention is 30 days; service-provider records and backups may follow separate retention schedules.

Access, correction, export and erasure

Contact contact@subneti.ca to request access, correction, a copy of your data or erasure. For newsletter requests, use the email address used for your subscription. Analytics records are not linked to that email address, so we may not be able to identify analytics records relating to you without additional information. You may also request restriction of processing or object where applicable. We may need to verify your identity before responding. WordPress provides personal-data export and erasure tools integrated with MailPoet. You may complain to the data-protection authority competent for your location.
